A campaign to put pressure on the Sudanese government to stop using oil profits to fund its war effort gets underway today.

Trocaire is joining up with the Irish-Sudanese Solidarity Group to lobby European oil companies against operating in the country.

The conflict there is wreaking misery on thousands, who are being forced to flee their homes while battles rage between rebel and government forces.

Trocaire’s head of development, Eamon Meehan has said that resources from Europe must dry up.

He said European companies are involved in oil exploration in Sudan and supporting the government’s tactics, which are leading to a massive displacement of the population.
