The Government is reportedly planning to set up a new service to process asylum applications, work permits and visas as part of an overhaul of the immigration system.

Reports this morning said the establishment of the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service was expected to be approved by the Cabinet tomorrow.

If approved, the body will reportedly be set up in April and would be attached to the Department of Justice.

Three government departments are responsible for various aspects of the immigration system.
