Adam Carroll suffered a miserable day for Team Ireland in qualifying for tomorrow's A1GP races in Durban, with a fuel pump problem in sprint qualifying leaving him at the back of the grid.
The team fixed the problem for feature race qualifying, but Carroll blotted his copy book with a spin that brought out the red flag and left him in 13th place for tomorrow's feature race.
Team Great Britain secured second-row grid slots but driver Oliver Jarvis admitted afterwards that a pole position had been there for the taking.
Joint championship leaders Switzerland claimed the feature race pole with Neel Jani at the wheel, while Canada secured the honours for the sprint thanks to a late effort from the charging Robert Wickens.
Jarvis claimed fourth place for both races despite looking good to bag the fastest time in each session.
Jani was hugely impressive in securing his seventh career pole for the Swiss, posting a time of one minute 17.688 seconds to edge out Canada.
New Zealand's Jonny Reid took third ahead of Jarvis, who had held second heading into the dying seconds of the session.
Sprint race qualifying effectively boiled down to just one session after Reid spun at turn four to bring out the red flag in segment one with only six cars having set a time.
Canada claimed the pole with a time of 1min 18.150secs, less than a tenth quicker than Team Brazil returnee Bruno Junqueria.
Reid recovered from his earlier misdemeanour to secure a second-row berth with third ahead of Jarvis.
Switzerland secured fifth place, while Germany's Michael Ammermuller was sixth after impressing in yesterday's rookie session.
South Africa's Adrian Zaugg also endured a torrid qualifying hour.
The Eastern Creek winner span at the start of qualifying and, despite recovering back to the pits, failed to post a time and will line up at the back of the sprint grid for his home event.
Zaugg failed to improve his fortunes greatly in feature race qualifying, managing just 14th place after Carroll's spin compromised his charge.
