Seven men were being questioned by gardaí today after a series of major drugs raids across Dublin and Meath.

Heroin, cocaine and cannabis thought to have a street value in the region of €2.5m were seized in four separate raids over a period of 12 hours yesterday.

The men being quizzed by detectives at a number of Garda stations in Louth, Meath and Dublin are all being held under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996, and can be detained for up to seven days.

In the biggest haul, heroin and cannabis valued at around €1.4m was recovered in Trim, Co Meath. Two men – one in his 20s, the other in his 30s – were arrested.

Another three men, in their 20s, were arrested in Co Meath after gardaí smashed what is believed to have been a cocaine-cutting plant in the Athboy area.

Around half a million euro worth of the drug was recovered along with five handguns. Forensic and ballistic experts will test the firearms to see if they can be linked to other crimes.

Heroin with a potential street value of up to €450,000 was recovered at Clondalkin, west Dublin. A 22-year-old man was arrested.

A 25-year-old man in Ballyfermot is also being questioned after drugs with an estimated street value of €20,000 were seized.
