Anscombe: We can do the job against Saracens

Mark Anscombe knows he has his work cut out for him, as he prepares his Ulster side for battle against Saracens in the Heineken Cup quarter finals.

The Ulster coach put his squad through their paces ahead of the trip to Twickenham this week after he saw his side return to some sort of form with their Rabo Direct Pro 12 win over Leinster at the weekend, their first win in Dublin since 1999.

Now that they know they can win in Dublin again, the possibility of a Heineken semi-final in Dublin could be a huge incentive for them to win in the same ground they lost to Leinster in last year’s final.

Both teams came first in their respective pools and some would argue that the Irish province had the harder progression route, having seen off the challenges of Castres, Glasgow and Northampton.

However, something has to be said for the English side who are top of the Aviva Premiership and have knocked off Munster, in what was a crucial game for them.

In the head-to-head battle Saracens have beaten Ulster the previous three times they have played.

Speaking at training, Anscombe said: “Saracens are the best team in England, there isn’t a doubt about it, they have a great track record and a lot of internationals.”

“Yes it’s a big task for us, but it’s one we’re confident on, and one where if we perform at our best we can do the job.”

Over the last week or so, there has been plenty of speculation, linking Stephen Ferris with a move to a Japeneese club.

Ferris has been out of action at Ulster with an injury that also saw the 27 year old miss the entire Six Nations campaign, and with his IRFU contract up on June 30, there is no telling where he might end up, with interest also coming from France and from Super Rugby in Australia.

“He’s a good man to have and he is a world class player.

“If Stephen moves, he will be doing it for what he thinks are the right reasons for himself and his future, but we certainly don’t want to lose him at Ulster.”
