Warplanes bomb Iraqi comms targets

US and British warplanes bombed Iraqi military command and communication targets near Talil in the south of the country today.

The strike was in response to the Iraqi air force shooting down an American unmanned spy plane on Monday, said US Central Command.

It described the bombing as a “self-defence” measure in response to the attack on the drone.

The warplanes used precision bombs and an assessment of how much damage was done to the targets was ongoing, the statement said.

On Monday, an Iraqi MiG-25 fighter shot down a Predator drone conducting reconnaissance in eastern Iraq.

US military officials said the MiG crossed into the “no-fly zone” over southern Iraq, which allied warplanes patrol to prevent Iraqi military planes from flying.
