The General Council of County Councils has urged the Government to immediately publish its national spatial strategy following the release of preliminary census figures today.

The General Council of County Councils has urged the Government to immediately publish its national spatial strategy following the release of preliminary census figures today.

A breakdown of the figures showed huge growth in suburban areas, but little in rural areas.

Jim Shortt, the chairman of the GCCC, said: "We have been promised the national spatial strategy for the past 12 months.

"It may already be too late to reverse the trends shown in the latest census results."
