EastEnders star Charlie Brooks is to quit her role as Janine Butcher, after five years in Albert Square.

Scheming Janine will bow out after a dramatic Christmas storyline in which she pushes husband Barry Evans (Shaun Williamson) over a cliff on honeymoon, reports The Sun.

Charlie, 22, said: "I have had the opportunity to do some theatre work. It might now be the time to think of different projects."

She made her EastEnders debut in June 1999. When dad Frank left Walford Janine fell to pieces and dabbled in drugs and prostitution.

She has tried to seduce most of the Square's men - including Jamie Mitchell, Billy Mitchell, Terry Raymond, Ian Beale, Paul Trueman and Barry. Her character will reportedly leave the Square next spring.
