A post mortem examination is due to be carried out today on the body of an elderly man who died after he was seriously assaulted in his home in Sligo Town.

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out today on the body of an elderly man who died after he was seriously assaulted in his home in Sligo Town.

Gardaí say the aggravated burglary at the house on Old Market Street happened sometime between 9pm on Wednesday and 9pm on Friday.

The man, who was in his late 60s, was found seriously injured and tied up in his home on Friday night.

He was taken to hospital, where he lost his fight for life last night.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact them at Sligo garda station.
