The Immigrant Council of Ireland has welcomed the new work-permits schemes announced by Minister for Enterprise Micheál Martin this morning.

The schemes include a green card system for skilled migrant workers and a special scheme that will allow the spouses and dependents of work-permit holders to also seek jobs in Ireland.

The Immigrant Council says the measures are welcome, but it says it would like to see greater consistency between the approaches of the Department of Enterprise and Department of Justice in relation to immigrants.

"It's our experience on the ground dealing with applications that there's no concept of permanent residency in existence at this time within the Department of Justice," a spokesperson said.

"We would like to see greater clarity and consistency of approach between the two specific government departments."
