Gardaí launch major road safety offensive

A major crack down on speeding and drink driving is underway for the bank holiday weekend.

Extra checkpoints are now in place around the country, with particular focus on the areas most prone to car accidents.

This weekend's campaign is to target young male drivers as they account for more than four out of every 10 fatalities on Irish roads.

Four people died in car crashes over the August Bank Holiday last year.

Head of the Garda National Traffic Bureau, Superintendent Gabriel McIntyre, is appealing to the families and friends of young men to put pressure on them to drive safely.
