The British government tonight warned that terrorists could be in the final stages of planning an attack in Saudi Arabia.

The UK's Foreign Office said it believed terrorists were planning attacks in the kingdom and that “these could be in the final stages of preparation”.

It has already warned British nationals against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia. Terrorist attacks were carried out in Riyadh in May and November this year.

The latest warning comes after fresh intelligence information. The British Foreign Office refused to give details.

A spokesman said: “Travel advice is kept under constant review based on an assessment of all information available to us. We are not able to comment on the nature of this information.”

Updated advice on the Foreign Office website said: “There is a continuing high threat of terrorism in Saudi Arabia.

“We continue to believe terrorists are planning further attacks in Saudi Arabia, and that these could be in the final stages of preparation.

“The threat includes, but is not limited to, residential compounds.”
