Pensioners say age limit on cancer screening is ageist

A group representing over 30 pensioners' organisations has urged the Government to extend breast cancer screening to women over the age of 64.

A group representing over 30 pensioners' organisations has urged the Government to extend breast cancer screening to women over the age of 64.

The Federation of Pensioners' Associations said the fact that the annual screening is not available free of charge to women once they pass that age is an example of ageism.

Federation president Bill Rothwell said with people living longer, there should be no age limit on who can avail of the screening.

Mr Rothwell said that women over the age of 64 are six times as likely to suffer from breast cancer than women in other age groups.
