Louth is emerging as one of the key marginal constituencies, as ballot boxes are opened and checked at the count centre in Dundalk.

With Labour’s Michael Bell fighting for political survival, and Sinn Fein’s Arthur Morgan hoping for a Dail breakthrough, the destination of the final seat in Louth won’t be known until late tonight, or possibly the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The initial indications are that the two will be very close.

Meanwhile, predictions that Social Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern will top the poll and will be joined in the next Dail by Fianna Fail colleague, Seamus Kirk and Fine Gael’s Senator Fergus O’Dowd, look set to be realised.
