A Garda informer has received a six-figure settlement from the State after his identity was released to a criminal gang.

The Irish Examiner reports that the 49-year-old from Limerick was forced to leave Ireland because he feared for his life.

A dispute over his exact status within the force meant he was not afforded any protection.

Journalist with the Irish Examiner, Michael Clifford, said his identity was then revealed to the three-man gang, who were charged with armed robbery.
