Call for compulsory training for bikers

All motorcyclists should have to undergo a compulsory training course before taking to the tarmac, it was claimed today.

After two riders lost their lives on Irish roads at the weekend, Progressive Democrat Senator Tom Morrissey said action must be taken to improve safety.

“Compulsory training courses for motorcycle drivers have been promised for a number of years but have yet to be introduced,” he said.

“The Irish motorcycle fatality rate, with around one death a week, is the highest in Europe, and two and a half times higher than in Britain. These two tragic deaths at the weekend are another painful reminder of the carnage on our roads and action must be taken.”

The PD Transport spokesman said 50 motorcyclists lost their lives on Irish roads last year, and while motorcyclists make up only about 2% of all licensed vehicle holders, they account for 12% of road deaths and 10% of all road injuries.

Mr Morrissey said this number could be reduced if a compulsory training course were introduced.

“At present, a person can go out, buy a motorcycle and drive it without ever having taken lessons, or undergone any basic training,” he said.

“The only requirement is that they sit a theory test and then obtain a provisional licence.

“This is a crazy situation, and one that needs immediate remedying.”

Mr Morrissey said the most recent figures showed 22% of motorcyclists on Irish roads have received no training whatsoever.

He said the Irish Rider Training Association runs a number of different courses across the country for motorcyclists but they are not compulsory.

“A training course will not save lives in every situation, but it will better prepare drivers to cope with wet and dangerous driving conditions, improve reaction to hazards and greater control of the bike, particularly at speed,” he said.

“At present, an Irish motorcyclist is 2-3 times more likely to be killed than in other European countries, according to the OECD. The law must be changed so that a person undergoes a basic compulsory driving course before they are able to get a provisional licence for a motorbike.”
