Government figures have reportedly revealed that only a tiny fraction of convicted sex offenders in Ireland are completing rehab programmes.
Reports this morning say just 42 of the 578 sex offenders released from prison in the past five years have completed the Sex Offender Rehabilitation Programme.
The figures have been disclosed by Justice Minister Dermot Ahern in response to a written parliamentary question from Fine Gael TD Alan Shatter.
Mr Shatter is describing the situation as 'scandalous' and says the Government is clearly failing to ensure that sex offenders complete the necessary rehabilitation.
The Department of Justice says it is reviewing the system and looking at providing more rehab courses.
