Offaly amateur Shane Lowry regained the outright top spot when play got underway at the 3 Irish Open in Baltray again this morning, birdying the third to draw one stroke ahead of Robert Rock on 17 under.

Lowry was cheered on to the opening tee and after two opening pars gave the fans more to shout about when he struck his second shot to 12 feet on the downwind long third.

Although he just missed the eagle opportunity a birdie was good enough to make him the outright leader again and, after his closing bogey six yesterday, back on course to become only the third amateur ever to win on the European Tour.

Rock and Swede Johan Edfors parred the first three to be one and three behind, while Frenchman Thomas Levet did eagle the third and moved to solo fourth on 12 under, five back.

Play had again been postponed this morning due to strong winds.
