The Government is to scrap hundreds of pieces of outdated legislation in the coming months.

The move was announced last night by the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, who said legislation to repeal the old laws would be finalised before the General Election.

Around 3,200 pieces of legislation introduced before the founding of the Irish Free State in 1921 are set to deleted from the statute books.

Some of the laws date back to Norman times and have caused legal confusion over whether they are still applicable.
