Firefighters were tackling a major blaze following an explosion at a car components factory on the outskirts of Belfast today.

Firefighters were tackling a major blaze following an explosion at a car components factory on the outskirts of Belfast today.

Police said the incident at the Montupet plant at Dunmurry appeared to be accidental. There were no reports of any casualties.

A police spokeswoman said: “The fire service remain at the scene and are determining the cause of the accident.

“Police have now left the scene.”

The explosion occurred in the factory area used to manufacturer cylinder heads.

All staff in the plant were immediately evacuated as emergency crews were called in.

One worker said: “A big extractor machine on the side of the wall just blew out.

“We don’t know how it happened but it’s a miracle that no-one was injured.”
