Gort in shock after overnight blaze kills two

Investigations are underway after two people died in a fire in Co Galway.

The blaze at a building in Gort was discovered shortly before 3am this morning.

A woman aged in her 60s and a man in his 30s were pronounced dead at the scene.

Station Road in Gort remains sealed off this afternoon as forensic examinations continue following the overnight fatal fire.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze in the Tom O'Donnell Flats building at around 2.50am this morning.

Fire Brigade crews from Gort and Loughrea attended the scene which is just off the main street in the town.

They spent a number of hours working to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading from the end of terrace building to other nearby properties.

The bodies of a 38-year-old man and a woman aged in her mid 60s were discovered in the burnt out building which was extensively damaged.

No one else was in the property.

Their remains were taken to University Hospital Galway, where post mortem examinations will be carried out later today to determine exactly how they died.

Fr Thomas Marrinan, the Parish Priest in Gort, spoke to Galway Bay FM saying there is a lot of shock in the town.
