Bank customer robbed by man wielding a machete

A man has been threatened with a machete and robbed inside a bank in the North.

The victim was targeted while making a deposit at a branch of the Ulster Bank on Belfast’s Shankill Road just before 9.40am this morning.

The thief, described as being about 5ft 9in and of stocky build, fled in a silver-coloured car towards the city centre.

A spokesman for the Ulster Bank said no-one was hurt in the incident.

“Ulster Bank can confirm an incident took place this morning at our Shankill Road branch. The PSNI are currently investigating this matter and we are liaising closely with them.

“No staff or customers were injured.”

Meanwhile, PSNI Detective Inspector Jacqueline Scott appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

She said: “I would ask anyone who saw the silver car in the area at the time of the incident or who knows anything about this incident to contact CID at Tennent Street police station on the non-emergency number 101.”
