Walsh reassures farmers on CAP

Agriculture Minister Joe Walsh has reiterated his opposition to the European Commission’s proposed reform of the Common Agriculture Policy.

Agriculture Minister Joe Walsh has reiterated his opposition to the European Commission’s proposed reform of the Common Agriculture Policy.

Mr Walsh was speaking after the Irish Farmers Association claimed yesterday that the proposals would lead to 19,000 job losses in Ireland and take more than €350m from the rural economy each year.

Mr Walsh said today that it is too early to predict the level of job losses because the proposed CAP reform is still subject to negotiations.

"These are only proposals. They’re at an initial stage," he said.

"The negotiations will go on for 12 months and I would hope and expect to bring about significant modifications and improvements in them."
