Former soldier jailed for eight years

A 25-year-old former soldier from Cork has been jailed for eight years for stabbing his cousin 15 times.

Last month, Anthony Leahy of Sirius House, Cork Road, Passage West was cleared by a jury of murdering Jonathan Daly and was instead found guilty of his manslaughter on January 19 last year.

The Central Criminal Court heard evidence that the two men had been drinking and got into a row after the 25-year-old deceased man threatened Anthony Leahy's girlfriend.

Daly was described in court as a lovely man who was the demon when he had a drink on him.

The court heard the row broke out after he threatened to attack Leahy’s girlfriend and murder her family.

The judge imposed a 10-year sentence with the final two years suspended.
