The Equality Tribunal today hosted a meeting with the Office of the Legal Chancellor (OLC) of Estonia.
Discussed were procedures and development of the Equality Tribunal and its experience of dealing with equality legislation and complaints of alleged discrimination within the framework of EU Directives and principles.
The OLC is the central authority for handling and resolving discrimination complaints in Estonia and is currently developing a system for investigating complaints of alleged discrimination in advance of Estonia's forthcoming accession to the EU.
As part of their preparation, ten OLC officials are participating in a programme of study-visits to EU member states and institutions to learn how complaints of alleged discrimination are handled.
Estonia currently has no domestic equality legislation, and relies on EU directives and the Estonian constitution, so the Equality Tribunal's experience of implementing and interpreting EU law will be of great benefit to the OLC.
