Johnson Wagner opened up a three-stroke lead over Mathew Goggin and Charlie Hoffman at the midway point of the Houston Open after carding a three-under-par 69 during the rain interrupted second round yesterday.
Wagner followed up his course-record opening round 63 to move onto 12-under-par overall after shipping two bogeys over his second round.
After rain had caused a delay of just under two hours, play was finally suspended due to bad light with 36 players unable to complete their second rounds.
“It was hard for me to sleep because I really wanted to get out there and keep playing,” said Wagner said. “I missed a bunch of chances coming in, but I’m pleased with the round.
“I’m sure this weekend, as with every round I play though, I’m sure I’ll be nervous. You have to use it to your advantage and nerves don’t have to be a bad thing.”
Australian Goggin carded a second round 64 to move onto nine-under-par after picking up two eagles in four holes towards the end of his front nine, while Hoffman signed for a two-under 70.
“Obviously, it was a bonus,” said Goggin. “You always think that when you hit the shot. But it’s important over the next two holes not to give them back.”
Chad Campbell (64) sits a seven-under-par, with Lucas Glover (69), Robert Garrigus (67), Nicholas Thompson (seven to play) a further shot adrift and Jose Maria Olazabal (70), Ben Crane (65) and defending champion Adam Scott (76) at five-under.
First round leader Scott endured a tough second round and slipped down the leaderboard after shipping five bogeys and a double-bogey.
Phil Mickelson, the highest ranked player in the field, shot a four-under 68 and is eight shots adrift of Wagner.
Finally, John Daly withdrew from the tournament after seven holes of his second round citing back problems.
