No firm decision has yet been made on the holding of another referendum on abortion.
Government sources say they are awaiting a report from a cabinet sub-committee before the Government decides on its next step.
Speculation is rife following weekend reports that a referendum may be held in October. The Taoiseach pledged four years ago to independent TDs Mildred Fox and Harry Blaney that a referendum would be held on the issue.
Currently, a cabinet sub-committee made up of Bertie Ahern, Micheal Martin, John O’Donoghue and Liz O’Donnell is examining an Oireachtas report on abortion.
If they clear the way for preliminary legislation, it would be feasible for a vote before the end of the year.
