Tribunal judge Lindsay criticises Government

Judge Alison Lindsay has attacked the Minister for Health whom she says failed to defend her report into the hepatitis and HIV blood scandal.

Judge Alison Lindsay has attacked the Minister for Health whom she says failed to defend her report into the hepatitis and HIV blood scandal.

Judge Lindsay has written to the Attorney General criticising the Government and questioning whether judges should chair such tribunals in future.

A spokesperson for Minister Micheál Martin says he has committed himself to addressing deficiencies in the Tribunal of Inquiry system following Judge Lindsay's recommendations.

But Margaret Dunne of the Irish Haemophiliac Society says that was more than a year ago and the National Haemophilia Council, which was promised in September 2002, has still not been set up.

The Irish Haemophiliac Society had criticised the tribunal findings as "weak" and "not being followed up".

Despite the terms of reference, the inquiry never investigated the role of US drug companies in providing contaminated blood products.
