Over 100 personalities from across Europe have come together in support of the threatened Erasmus programme.

Over 100 personalities from across Europe have come together in support of the threatened Erasmus programme.

The exchange programme sees students study abroad in European universities.

Luminaries including Spanish film director Pedro Almodovar, former Irish rugby captain Mick Galwey and several Olympians have signed an open letter to European heads of state calling for the scheme to be kept.

There are fears Erasmus funding may have to be severely reduced due to wrangling over the 2012 and 2013 EU budgets.

The programme already faces a €90m shortfall this year and it iSus feared the situation will worsen next year.
