Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson head a list of nine Americans who have turned down golf’s World Cup in Spain next month.
The United States will be represented instead by 21st-ranked Scott Verplank and 48th-ranked Bob Tway.
As well as Woods and Mickelson, there were rejections from six more of the beaten Ryder Cup team – Davis Love, Stewart Cink, Jim Furyk, Chris DiMarco, Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry – and from Open champion Todd Hamilton.
