Pipe bomb defused in Belfast

A pipe bomb was made safe outside a house in west Belfast early today.

A pipe bomb was made safe outside a house in west Belfast early today.

Police said the device, described as viable, was discovered in Lenadoon Avenue late last night.

Army bomb disposal experts were sent in and the device was taken away for examination, with the security alert ending around 2.30am.

Meanwhile, in Downpatrick, Co Down, police were investigating a gun attack on a house.

A single shot was fired through a window into the living room window of a house in the Seaforde Road.

It caused damage but there were no injuries, said a spokeswoman.
