A Sligo based Garda Sergeant pleaded guilty to three charges under the Forgery Act this afternoon. Garda John Nicholson of Cornageeha in Sligo appeared before a sitting of Riverstown District Court.

He is the second member of the Gardai to be charged in connection with the McBrearty affair. Nicholson pleaded guilty to charges of uttering or passing of employer’s certificates to claim expenses to appear in court in Donegal.

The court was told that he passed on the certificates on behalf of a Sergeant in the county. Garda Nicholson claimed he did not forge the documents and made no personal gain.

On hearing the evidence of Garda Nicholson’s character and previous Garda record Judge Anderson applied Section 1 of the probation of Offenders Act of 1907.
