FF and PD's divided over abortion referendum

A row is brewing between Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats over the timing of a referendum on the emotive issue of abortion.

Earlier today, the Tanaiste, Mary Harney, said a referendum this autumn would be 'bitter, divisive and damaging' and called for a full and open debate on abortion before any poll is called.

However, Fianna Fail senator Des Hanafin, who is also president of the pro-life campaign, described Ms Harney's comments as 'unhelpful'.

Mr Hanafin said the public will take a very cynical view if the Government tries to dodge holding an abortion referendum before its term in office runs out next year.

He has disagreed that an abortion this autumn would be bitter and divisive.

Independent TD Harry Blaney, one of the four independents who support the coalition, has also called for clarification of the Government's position on the issue.

Fianna Fail and PDs promised the four independent TDs an abortion referendum within five years during negotiations for the establishment of the present Government four years ago.
