'Gizzy' sidelined for Championship

Former captain and free-taker Diarmuid 'Gizzy' Lyng has been ruled out of Wexford's plans for this summer's Hurling Championship.

Lyng missed the Allianz Hurling League due to a virus and he will also be sidelined for the upcoming Championship - Liam Dunne's charges face Dublin in a Leinster SHC quarter-final on June 8.

Wexford manager Dunne said: "Gizzy won't be in our plans for the summer. He has missed too much time at this stage."

The St Martin's clubman, acknowledged as one of the country's top midfielders, was in excellent form during Wexford's 2012 Championship campaign.

He hit a mammoth 0-15 against Westmeath and batted home 1-3 in a July qualifier defeat to Cork.

The ongoing viral infection kept him out of the Model men's league run. He received treatment during a recent stint in Australia over the Easter period, but it was to no avail.

Wexford wrapped up their Division 1B programme with a 2-16 to 1-19 draw with table toppers Limerick, which saw them finish fourth overall of the six second tier teams.

Dunne's list of absentees for the Championship also includes Liam Og McGovern (hip injury), Matthew O'Hanlon (studying abroad) and Diarmuid O'Keeffe (travelling).
