Borat and mule-drawn cart open film premiere
Borat brought the glory of Kazakhstan to the West End tonight.
The comic creation of Sacha Baron Cohen attended the British premiere of his new film.
The spoof journalist and “Kazakhstan’s sixth most famous man” arrived on the red carpet in a wooden cart drawn by a mule.
He brought along 30 members of his peasant family and several barrels of fermented horse urine.
Borat said he was hoping to meet Madonna after reading about her adoption of 13 month old Malawian boy David Banda.
“I have brought here with me my 11-year-old son, his wife and their new-born baby, who I am hoping to sell to singing transvestite Madonna,” he said.
He is also looking forward to meeting the Queen, “although not for sexy time”.
Borat attempted to lead the crowd lining rain-soaked Leicester Square in a rendition of the “Kazakhstan national anthem”.
Afterwards he told them: “Good evening gentlemen and prostitutes.
“After this I stay in a hotel in Kings Cross, you must come and join me. We will all drink, wrestle with no clothes on and shoot dogs from the window.”
The film, Borat: Cultural Learning’s Of America Or Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan, opens nationwide on November 2.
Celebrities at the premiere included Peaches Geldof, Trinny Woodall, Holly Willoughby and Desperate Housewives star Jesse Metcalfe.
Borat has dismayed the Government of Kazakhstan with his claims that the country's national pastimes are ``disco dancing, archery, rape and table tennis'' and his attempts to lead Americans at a rodeo in a rendition of ``popular folk songs'' Throw The Jew Down The Well.
But tonight the Central Asian country launched a new PR offensive in the shape of real-life Kazakh TV star Jantik Baimukhamedov.
He arrived at the premiere in full national costume and with a giant sidekick reminiscent of James Bond character Jaws.
Unfortunately, Jantik arrived late for the premiere.
When he ventured on to the half empty red carpet he was politely asked to leave because he did not have a ticket.
Jantik insisted the Kazakh people have a sense of humour about Borat.
“They understand this Cohen man is a good comic,” he said.
“The Kazakh people can joke this way or even better, for example like me. I am making a movie right now in Kazakhstan. I have showed it to some people in showbusiness and they say it’s going to be even funnier than Borat.”
He said: “I think this movie is going to Kazakhstan after Britain and the people can’t wait because they really, really love this person.”
And he added somewhat optimistically: “It’s very good for tourism, I think.”
