998 families were in emergency accommodation in Dublin last month - that is the highest number recorded so far this year.

That is according to new figures from the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive.

However, the latest figures show the net increase in families experiencing homelessness in the capital - fell to just five - in August of this year.

The executive says it is the first significant reduction in the net increase becoming homeless.

The figures also show 825 individuals moved from homeless accommodation into their own tenancies in Dublin in the first six months of this year.

Of the 825 tenancies, 384 were local authority lettings and 388 tenancies were provided through the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) Pilot, whilst the remaining 52 returned to renting in the private sector.
