The Irish Farmers Association has urged Agriculture Minister Joe Walsh to take every available measure to ensure foot and mouth disease does not resurface in Ireland.

Eight new cases of the disease have been confirmed in England over the past few days.

IFA president Tom Parlon said controls between England and the North are very lax and the border between the North and the Republic has recently been reopened.

For this reason, he said, the Government and individual farmers must redouble efforts to keep the disease out of Ireland.
