Justine Henin finally got the better of Monica Seles at the fifth time of asking to book her place in the Wimbledon semi-finals.
The tiny Belgian won an engrossing match 7-5 7-6 in rapidly fading light on Centre Court and earned a match against Venus Williams, her conqueror last year in the final.
Henin kept focused during two rain delays and battled back from a break down in the second set with a searing array of her trademark backhand passes.
And she revealed how the memories of last year’s final were spurring her on to repeat her appearance on the championships’ final Saturday.
Henin said: ‘‘I went back home after last year’s final a little bit sad but I knew I would have opportunities in more Grand Slam finals.
‘‘I knew that I could do it but I needed more experience and I think this year has been a lot more positive for me. I have played much better in the first six weeks and now I’ll just try to continue that.’’
Henin’s win could statistically have been regarded as a shock given her seeding of six and Seles’ of fourth.
Seles said: ‘‘I know I gave it my best shot and I guess that’s the best I can do.’’
Seles did trouble her opponent now and again but Henin hit back for a victory which arguably could be called her most important since last year’s semi-final win over Jennifer Capriati.
Henin added: ‘‘The match was really really tough so I’m pretty happy with my victory. I proved today that I am not scared to play against her.’’
