Gilligan trial: Warren comes under fire

Lawyers for John Gilligan have cross-examined State supergrass Russell Warren for a second day at the Special Criminal Court.

Lawyers for John Gilligan have cross-examined State supergrass Russell Warren for a second day at the Special Criminal Court.

Warren has identified John Gilligan as one of two men who ordered him to follow Veronica Guerin on the day she was murdered.

"You are a liar. You are a cynical man, a man prepared to get his wife to make false statements to get you off the hook", were just some of the criticisms levelled at Russell Warren today by defence council Terrence McDonald SC.

Mr Warren who claims he collected Gilligan's drugs money and took it out of the country. This afternoon he was quizzed about the motorcycle he stole which was later used in the Guerin killing.

Softly-spoken Warren sat nervously in the witness box surrounded by armed detectives while John Gilligan - the man he alleges was his former crime boss - sat in the dock listening intently and taking notes.

Warren will be back in the witness box next Tuesday.
