Trade Union leaders are rejecting claims public opinion at home and in the United States is shifting towards support for a war with Iraq.

They say there is massive resistance the use of the armed force, and are urging people to turn out on the international day of protest against war on February 15.

It comes as France and Germany stand four square against an immediate military strike.

General Secretary of the Irish Congress Trade Unions, David Begg, says opposition will grow if war is unleashed.

"There is a considerable opposition to this. Not just here incidentally and right across Europe but in the United States itself.

"It is interesting that 'USA Today' had a poll that revealed 37% of the American population are against the war.

"Before the war starts at all that is a very significant percentage of people from a country which is categorised by it's patriotism and support for a president during a time of crisis."
