The group representing patients who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Dr Michael Shine are due to meet Health Minister Mary Harney later today.

The group representing patients who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Dr Michael Shine are due to meet Health Minister Mary Harney later today.

The Dignity 4 Patients group will be pressing Ms Harney to launch a full inquiry into the allegations against the former surgeon.

Dr Shine was acquitted of sexual assault during a court case six years ago following complaints by dozens of patients treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda between the 1960s and 1990s.

However, he was struck off the medical register last year for professional misconduct relating to his behaviour towards three male patients.

Dignity 4 Patients says an inquiry is needed to determine how Dr Shine was allowed to continue working at the hospital for so long.
