Mystery of disappearing polling stations

A number of polling stations traditionally used for voting in Limerick have disappeared from the list of places for The Lisbon Treaty poll, a spokesman for Republican Sinn Féin said today.

Joe Lynch from Beechgrove Avenue in Ballinacurra Weston, the vice-chairman of the Munster RSF Executive said that elderly people will have to walk a considerable distance to vote because some polling stations are not being used.

For example people voted in the band hall in Edward Street but this time the venue is not being used and they have to vote in Mulgrave Street which is a very considerable distance away, he said.

We are getting the same story from people all over the area. There are fewer polling stations and this will impose hardship on elderly people who wish to vote.

The disappearing polling stations are a cause for concern as it will discourage people from casting their vote.

One would think that it should be made easier for people to vote but on this occasion, it would appear that obstacles are being put in their place.

We are now calling on the local authority to reveal how many polling stations have been closed on this occasion and to do so before polling day.
