Tonight's TV tips

SPORT: Live: Liverpool v Everton (BT Sport 1, 7pm)

Merseyside derbies always have an edge to them of course, but this season the stakes are higher than ever.

Both clubs are within touching distance of Champions League football and all the rewards that brings. This is a real six-pointer and they know it.

The last derby at Goodison produced a 3-3 thriller, and with both teams in attacking mood this season, we can expect more edge-of-the-seat stuff this evening.

GAME SHOW: Celebrity Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (UTV, 8pm)

Most celebrities are so far past the ‘millionaire’ marker in their earnings, the title of this mega-money game show seems something of a contradiction in itself.

But of course, there’s a much more heartwarming reason for their taking part in Chris Tarrant’s dream-making machine – it’s all in the name of charity.

However, there’s a bittersweet feeling, as we approach tonight’s programme, as it is the first of two specials bringing the programme to a close after more than 15 years on the air.

Taking part tonight, and seeing if they can scoop the big bucks, are comedian Russell Kane and broadcaster Gloria Hunniford, presenter Adrian Chiles and funnyman Frank Skinner, and singer Alexandra Burke with royal fashion designer David Emanuel.

LIFESTYLE: Operation Transformation (RTE One 8:30pm)

It's the midway mark and our experts want to see the five leaders knuckle down and focus on the forthcoming month before the finale.

We catch up with Aaron and Elaine in Tallaght to see the changes they’re making towards a healthier future.

We also gain an insight into how obesity is affecting Ireland’s largest paediatric hospital, Our Lady’s in Crumlin and presenter Kathryn Thomas is on the road to surprise our second hero teacher.

As always, Karl Henry, fitness expert, Dr Eva Orsmond, medical doctor and Dr Eddie Murphy, a principle clinical psychologist with the HSE are on hand encourage the five leaders to drastically change their eating and exercise habits, and inspire viewers to follow them on their journey.

DOCUMENTARY: Paul O’Grady’s Animal Orphans (UTV, 9pm)

In tonight’s final episode, Paul O’Grady going gooey-eyed over animals again.

This series has taken the likeable host’s passion for animals and blown it up on a much bigger scale, sending him to South Africa and Zambia to meet animals that have been orphaned in the wild.

Paul is at Chipembele Animal Rescue, where he meets Douglas, a hippo calf who was found at five months old wandering alone near the Zambezi River.

The presenter also meets an abandoned baby giraffe called Melmin at Moholoholo, an animal rehabilitation centre.

Paul spends time with his favourite baby elephant, Nakala, as well as learning about vultures, which are endangered species in Africa.

DRAMA: Death in Paradise (BBC One, 9pm)

Drama series about a detective inspector who is assigned to investigate a murder on the paradise island of Saint-Marie in the Caribbean.

Josette Simon is one of Britain’s most acclaimed actresses, having spent more than three decades supporting projects such as ‘Cry Freedom’ and ‘Merlin’.

However, for many fans of cult TV, she will always be best remembered as Dayna Mellanby in ‘Blake’s 7’, the show which never let shaky sets and cheap effects get in the way of a good story.

Thankfully the budget for this series is a lot bigger, and the stories aren’t bad either. The focus of this week’s show is Fidel’s suave old school friend, Carlton Parish, who he sees at an art gallery with Dorothy Foster, a wealthy older woman.

FILM: The Fourth Kind (2009) (Film4, 9pm)

The title of the film refers to J Allen Hynek’s classification of close encounters with aliens, of which the fourth kind is abduction.

A psychologist Dr Abigail Tyler interviews patients who all report the same disturbing symptoms. Real-life footage of interviews between Dr Tyler and her patients is shown alongside recreations starring Milla Jovovich as Tyler.

But in the process of the investigation, she encounters some terrifying discoveries which lie closer to home than she ever could have anticipated.

‘The Fourth Kind’ is masterfully draped in suspense that will leave you at the edge of your seat, and watch out for the shocking twist at the end.

NEW ON NETFLIX: Winter’s Bone (2010)

‘Hunger Games’ star Jennifer Lawrence plays 17 year—old Ree Dolly, who sets out to track down her father, who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared.

If she fails, Ree and her family will be turned out into the Ozark woods.

Challenging her outlaw kin’s code of silence and risking her life, Ree hacks through the lies, evasions and threats offered up by her relatives and begins to piece together the truth.
