Three for Hills in Guineas

Barry Hills has moved to clarify the situation regarding running and riding arrangements for his Stan James 2000 Guineas contenders.

Barry Hills has moved to clarify the situation regarding running and riding arrangements for his Stan James 2000 Guineas contenders.

The Lambourn trainer has confirmed his son Michael will ride either Killybegs or Red Clubs, with Michael’s twin brother Richard on the other.

However, a decision is not likely until Thursday when the 48-hour final declarations are made.

Jamie Spencer has been booked for Hills’ other runner, Olympian Odyssey.

In a statement, Hills senior said: “Contrary to all the speculation and talk regarding the riding arrangements of our horses in the 2000 Guineas, it has now been decided that we will have three runners in the race.

“Olympian Odyssey will be ridden by JP Spencer, Killybegs by Michael Hills and Red Clubs by Michael Hills. Richard Hills will ride the horse that Michael doesn’t choose and he will have until Thursday morning to make up his mind.”

Michael Hills admits he is finding it difficult to choose between Craven Stakes winner Killybegs and Greenham victor Red Clubs. He is hoping for clues when he partners both horses at work tomorrow.

“I’m going down tomorrow morning to ride the horses work and there’s not really much between the two, but I’m going to give them a chance to see how they have come out of their last race,” the jockey told At The Races.

“If one has come out better than the other that could sway me tomorrow morning.

“In the trials, both horses won very well. There was plenty of pace in both races, the horses were in the right spot and they both finished extremely well.

“Red Clubs probably blew a little bit more than Killybegs but Killybegs has improved from two to three an awful lot.

“Red Clubs is a real professional and he ran a lot of times last year. He got into a few battles and sometimes that can help you in the Guineas and he quickened up very well.”

The sponsors quote Killybegs at 14-1 with Red Clubs at 20-1.
