A man who had been given the all-clear for breast cancer at University College Hospital in Galway a number of years ago will reportedly have to undergo surgery following a review of his tests.

Reports this morning say the man was informed about the error in the past few days and will now have to undergo a bilateral mastectomy.

The HSE has refused to reveal whether the error was discovered during a recent review of the work of a pathologist who was employed at the hospital in 2004.

Breast cancer more usually occurs in women, but it can affect men in rare cases.
