The Government is expected to come under pressure to clarify it's position on Iraq in the Dail this afternoon.

The Government is expected to come under pressure to clarify it's position on Iraq in the Dail this afternoon.

An emergency meeting of the EU leaders in scheduled for Monday in Brussels and the Taoiseach will be expected to state our position.

Fine Gael's Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Gay Mitchell, says the current position adopted on Iraq is unclear and that is unacceptable.

He said: "I think it is extraordinary that you have NATO allies of the US; France, Germany and Belgium taking an independent line and our Government are prepared to consider unilateral action against Iraq.

"Not multilateral action, as sanctioned by the UN Security Council. I find that an extraordinary department from the policy expelled by Minister Cowen prior to now and I will be asking why that is the case."
