Champions League: Bhoys must learn Champions League ropes

Lubo Moravcik believes Celtic need to be playing in the Champions League for many years to come before they can think about spiking the big guns of Europe.

Lubo Moravcik believes Celtic need to be playing in the Champions League for many years to come before they can think about spiking the big guns of Europe.

This season’s foray into the group stages has been the Hoops’ first, and if they can beat Juventus tonight and Rosenborg can hold Porto they will reach the second stage.

But Celtic’s veteran playmaker insists success will not come overnight and he believes it will take time before the Bhoys can contemplate winning the European Cup.

Moravcik said: ‘‘It’s difficult to say we have improved because we have not played many games in Europe.

‘‘Since I’ve been a Celtic player we’ve only played a couple of games in the UEFA Cup, so it’s difficult to judge the team after five or six games.

‘‘This team needs to play regularly in Europe at this level and I think you can’t compare them today with Real Madrid and Manchester United.

‘‘Manchester United started to build success and even Alex Ferguson didn’t win it in his first year. He won it after many years of trying.

‘‘So I think if we are to reach that level we have to be playing at this level again and again.

‘‘If Celtic want to do well in Europe then they have to make an improvement and play the best teams possible.’’

The Glasgow side now seem likely to go into the UEFA Cup after being taught lessons in Porto and Rosenborg, and Moravcik said: ‘‘I was hoping to go through to the second phase and I might still get the chance but it’s not up to us.

‘‘If we continue to play in the UEFA Cup we can still go far. There’s a lot of teams still in it, so we have a good chance to go far.’’

The 36-year-old is desperate for a crack at the Italian stars but insists he would have no complaints if manager Martin O’Neill opted to name him among his substitutes.

He has yet to start a Champions League Group E match and admits that the other players did well enough in the previous two home matches.

‘‘I am ready for the game. If I start I start and if I don’t then it’s not really a big problem,’’ he said.

‘‘I think we beat Porto and Rosenborg without me and did well in Juventus without me as well.’’

Juventus coach Marcello Lippi has promised to rest some of his biggest stars tonight.

But Moravcik believes whoever comes in will still be oozing class and will have the ability to hurt Celtic.

The Slovakian added: ‘‘I don’t think it will make any difference because Juventus have got a good squad and which ever players they choose to play in the Champions League will do their best.

‘‘But that’s not the most important thing for us, because we have to do what we did against Rosenborg and Porto here and win.

‘‘We can’t afford to look at what’s going on elsewhere as well. We will both be starting with 11 players, and anyone playing for Juventus has to be good.’’

Czech Pavel Nedved looks certain to start, and Moravcik rates him one of the top 20 players in the world.

‘‘He is at the right age and experience and with a couple of experiences behind him he is really strong mentally,’’ said the Celtic star.
