President to consider decision on International Protection Bill as Council of State meeting ends

Today's meeting of the Council of State has finished.

President Michael D Higgins called for the council to be convened to discuss the constitutionality of the International Protection Bill, which passed through the Oireachtas before Christmas.

President Higgins sought the advice of the council on three aspects the bill, which aims to simplify the application process for asylum seekers.

The President thanked the members of the Council of State and will take the decision in the next day on whether the Bill should be referred to the Supreme Court.
