Gardaí to introduce operation to target theft in Dublin

Gardaí are due to introduce a targeted operation to deal with shop lifting and muggings in Dublin.

The most shocking figure in the garda report for the Dublin Joint Policing Committee is the 415% rise in begging offences.

The garda report for the Dublin Joint Policing Committee indicates an 18% rise in robberies and muggings last year.

Fianna Fail Local Representative and member of the Dublin Joint Policing Committee Daithí de Róiste, says Gardaí are planning to respond to the rise in shop lifting and muggings.

"We've seen a small increase in theft from a person and theft from a shop and the Gardaí will be putting together an operation to target theft in Dublin city, especially now in the New Year now that things have quietened down after Christmas.

"The figures we saw where thefts from a shop are up 18%, so the Gardaí are looking at that and they're putting specific operations in place to combat that."
