Man shot in the back after fight arranged following pub row in Dublin

Two people are in Garda custody this morning in connection with a fatal shooting in Dublin yesterday.

The victim, who has been named locally as 41-year-old Edward O'Connor, was shot three times as he walked away from the scene of a fight on the Ballycoolin Road in Finglas yesterday evening.

Gardaí say they believe last night’s shooting may be connected to a row in a local pub on Saturday night.

It is understood that dispute led to an arranged fight near a scrapyard on the Ballycoolin Road yesterday evening, after which the victim was shot three times in the back as he walked away.

The victim was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown where he was pronounced dead.

A man in his 20s and a woman in her 30s were arrested late last night and they are being detained at Finglas Garda Station, where they can be held for up to seven days.

The scene of the shooting remains sealed off this morning as forensic experts examine the scene and a full post mortem is due to take place this afternoon.

UPDATE: Later, gardaí said a third person was arrested in connection with the shooting, a man in his 20s.

He was detained under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act at Blanchardstown Garda Station where he can be held for seven days.
